Municipal Corporations In Punjab

As of August 2022, there are total 13 Municipal Corporations in Punjab. Municipal corporation in Punjabi is called as 'Nagar Nigam' (ਨਗਰ ਨਿਗਮ). So if you are asked the question "how many Nagar Nigam in Punjab", then the answer is that there are 13 Nagar Nigam in Punjab.
Earlier there were 10 municipal corporations in Punjab. In September 2019, Punjab government created three new municipal corporations namely Batala in Gurdaspur district, Kapurthala city in Kapurthala district and Abohar in Fazilka district.
Kapurthala is the only district in the state which has more than one municipal corporation and these are Kapurthala and Phagwara.
The municipal corporations come under the control of Department of Local Government (also called as Local Bodies Department). Brahm Mohindra of Congress, who is an MLA from Patiala Rural East in Patiala district, is the cabinet minister of this department. The head office of this department is at Sector 35, Chandigarh.
A list of municipal corporations of Punjab and the names of the respective Mayors are given below. The latest local bodies elections in Punjab were held in February 2021 and the names of the mayors are updated according to that.
  1. Amritsar - Amritsar is the second largest city of Punjab and is famous for the Shri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). Karamjit Singh Rintu is the current mayor of Amritsar, elected in January 2018. He belongs to Congress party. Raman Bakshi is the senior deputy mayor and Younis Kumar is deputy mayor of Amritsar municipal corporation.
